Uzes
|
The Duke of Uzes inherited the title and prerogatives of the First Duke and Peer of France following the execution of the Duke of Montmorency in 1632 for rebellion. Ever since then, the town of Uzes proudly holds the title of "First Duchy of France". The chateau has remained the residence of the ducal family for over a thousand years. The town is encircled by the Boulevard Gambetta and is a maze of small streets and shaded squares lined with 17th and 18th century private residences. Uzes is dominated by towers; the most magnificent is the Fenestrelle, next to the Cathedral. |

Market days are Saturday (main market) and Wednesday (fruit and veg). A must see are the gardens of Tusson. Located at the foot of the King's tower and the Bishop's tower (12th century) the medieval garden is a living herbarium. |
